WHILE I BREATHE

The Good, The Bad and The Really Ugly of South Carolina Politics

Silence For Lindsey Graham

The cold public jockeying following the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham has to be one of the most insensitive, disgusting and crass political moves I have ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. Senator Graham has not even been gone 24 hours, yet according to The Hill,  Congressman Ralph Norman has already called President Trump seeking his endorsement for the race to fill Graham’s Senate seat.  If true, that volumes about Norman’s vulturine character.

Whether you agreed with Senator Graham or not, he devoted decades of his life to serving South Carolina and our nation.  His family, friends, and staff deserve time to grieve before the political jockeying begins.  And while it’s true the political clock is ticking quickly (a new primary must be held by mid-August), but common decency require decorum and decency.  There is no need to announce your ambitions to the media before a man has even been gone 24 hours.  Some things can wait

Now, like many South Carolinians, I am watching closely to see whom Governor Henry McMaster appoints to fill this unexpired Senate seat. We – no doubt – will see some extraordinary (though mostly secretive) politics, machinations and deals worthy of the Palmetto State’s long history of shenanigans and intrigue.

Meanwhile, as we show reverence with brief silence for a patriot and great South Carolinian, United States Senator Lindsey Olin Graham, may those whose greed is whetted by his passing silence themselves.

God bless the Senator’s family, and God bless South Carolina.
