WHILE I BREATHE

The Good, The Bad and The Really Ugly of South Carolina Politics

New Republic of Gilead

I read the H 3457 Human Life Protection bill 32 members of the S.C. House of Representatives decided to sign on. It is immensely disappointing that the current Heartbeat Law, with very limited exceptions, does not pass the scrutiny of the rulers of the New Republic of Gilead1 being formed here in South Carolina.

The bill stipulates no person can administer, prescribe, deliver or sell to a pregnant woman any medicine that may have the intent to cause an abortion. It does not matter if she was raped or her uncle or her neighbor or pastor or youth minister who poses as a good guy abused her. (Did you do know that a very large number of sexual abuse cases happen in the church or at home with a family member?)

Oh, and if you talk to a counselor, they become guilty of a crime, too in this fine piece of legislation. Both of this cases are a felony and these cost you $10,000 and 2 years in prison.

Also did you know in this bill that you cannot conceal the identify of the woman? It has to go before a judge and he decides if the record is sealed and then a reason for sealing must be given. This is the “Scarlet Letter Clause!”

There are so many other things wrong with this legislation and we wonder why women’s health care in South Carolina is at an all time low. We are a health care OBGYN desert for women. We have at least 15 counties in this state (one third!) with no OBGYN because of a fear of being sued. Women and children (after they are born) are at the bottom of the list of health priorities in South Carolina.

Keep track now that the Freedom Caucus or the Family Caucus think they are the conscience of the legislature now. No, make that the conscience of the entire state of South Carolina. What will be the next great moral decision this modern day Inquisition will make for us?

  1. The Republic of Gilead, colloquially referred to as simply Gilead or the “Divine Republic”, is the totalitarian, theonomic, and neo-Puritanical regime that takes over most of the continental United States of America in The Handmaid’s Tale. The regime can be seen as the overall main antagonist of the novel. ↩︎
