WHILE I BREATHE

The Good, The Bad and The Really Ugly of South Carolina Politics

Republican Values Have Become Night Soil

I am a Republican and I subscribe unwaveringly to the Republican Creed;

I do not choose to be a common man.
It is my right to be uncommon.

If I can seek opportunity, not security,
I want to take the calculated risk to dream and build,
to fail and to succeed.

If I can seek opportunity, not security,
I want to take the calculated risk to dream and build,
to fail and to succeed.

I refuse to barter incentive for dole.
I prefer the challenges of life to guaranteed security,
the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia.

I will not trade freedom for beneficence,
nor my dignity for a handout.

I will never cower before any master, save my God.
It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid.
To think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations;
to face the whole world boldly and say,
 “I am a free American.”

Freedom- freedom for all people and freedom from government interference in our lives.

Limited government –  limitations on what the government can and can’t do.  It should not interfere with personal matters.  How we live, reproduce, love and worship.  All people should be equal regardless of their race or gender.

Government should be close to the people – state or local level but if we are UNITED States, people in each state should not have different standards for freedom or the meaning of limited government.

  • Strong national defense
  • Quality public education for everyone
  • Limited taxes and a balanced budget
  • Encourage capitalism
  • Realistic Foreign Policy

Think about all these things when you vote and who you think will deliver them for you.

If, like me and so many others I have talked to, you are scared to vote and then again scared not too.  Yet, in 2024, in all of America is there no one we in whom we can put our trust and have hope for our grandchildren’s future?

I said I would always be honest, and these are my honest fears.  No matter who is elected,  there will be no compromises, agreements or accomplishments as what’s truly best for the American people.  We are divided into a cultural and ideological civil war.

Whether national or state levels, our politics have strayed from the real meaning of why America came to be in the first place.  This nation was created for people to be free to worship their beliefs or have no beliefs at all.  The first of us wanted relief from unfair taxes imposed by sovereigns an ocean away.  They wanted to hear, read about and discuss their leaders freely and choose the best people to be those leaders.  They didn’t want royalty – not a queen, not a king and certainly not a dictator.  What those new Americans wanted and deserved was simply to live their lives peacefully and thrive.

And we still do!  After 250+ years, the desire for those core human rights haven’t changed.  But look around.  Do you feel safe?  Do you feel secure?  Do you feel you can  say your peace without someone – maybe even the government – vilifying you, or worse?  Do you feel truly free?

Yet, where is the Republican Party?   The new GOP is not living up to its “creed” or, worse, the principles and intentions of the Founding Fathers.  When it needs most to be conservative, it’s moved into extremism.

In accepting the Republican nomination for President in 1964, Barry Goldwater famously said

But if you read his whole speech you will see the extremism about which he spoke is far from that practiced today by the Republican Party. So, too, the moderation he found so distasteful 60 years ago may well be what he would embrace today.

A friend told me a story about Bob Hope visiting the troops during the Korean War.  He arrived in the heat of summer and, on exiting the plane caught a whiff of the “night soil” Koreans used then to fertilize their crops.  Night soil is human excrement.

A hot breeze carried the odor right to Hope’s famous nose, causing him to grimace and say, “What IS that smell?

Well,” said his military escort, “that’s s**t, sir.

Hope responded, “I know, but what did they DO to it?”

Every political credo, dogma or creed is night soil.  Tell the masses what they want to hear, but s**t on them anyway.  It is true Democrats, and the Far Left has forced the political pendulum to swing wide right.  Their policies and ideologies represent precisely what the Founders were trying to prevent.  But no one, especially the Republican Party, is limiting how far that pendulum is going.

The Republican rank and file is populated by millions – scores of millions – of good, freedom loving Americans.  They aren’t racists, sexists or deplorable and they sure as hell aren’t garbage.  God bless them for they truly have the country’s best interest at heart.

Although the Grand Old Party on the national and state levels is not the neo-Nazi faction portrayed by Democrats and their far Left fellow travelers, the Republican leadership and the opportunists within have only themselves to blame for creating an ideological persona so easily compared.
